Hearthstone: Hunter, Hyenas and Hounds

Hello everybody, Geek Generation here.

I had a daily quest for 5 Hunter wins, so i tried picking up Hunter again. When i played Hunter earlier, i went with Mad Scientist and 2 or 3 traps. But i didn’t like it, especially in the Hunter mirror, where i seem to always get outplayed.

In fact, most of the time, i feel that my Eaglehorn Bow is pretty inefficient as i kept waiting for my trap to fire off. So this time, i went totally without traps. Imo, if there isn’t atleast one Snake Trap, the traps aren’t really worth playing at this meta at this time of the month.

1 x Hunter’s Mark
1 x Glaivezooka
2 x Quick Shot
2 x Eaglehorn Bow
2 x Animal Companion
2 x Kill Command
2 x Unleash the Hounds

2 x Webspinner
2 x Annoy-o-Tron
2 x Haunted Creeper
1 x Ironbeak Owl
2 x Knife Juggler
2 x Scavenging Hyena
2 x Houndmaster
2 x Piloted Shredder
1 x Loatheb
1 x Savannah Highmane
1 x Dr. Boom

You can replace Dr. Boom with a second Savannah Highmane. In fact, i would’ve gone without Dr. Boom if i had the second Savannah Highmane.

The deck has plenty of room for customization. I see Hunter decks with only 1 Quickshot, without Houndmaster, without Glaivezooka. I kind of like Glaivezooka though. It makes turn 1 Webspinner a stronger play, makes Annoy-o-Tron more dangerous than just annoying.

I don’t like the amount of 4 drops though. Probably one Houndmaster would be dropped in favor of some other cards.

I do kind of like the Scavenging Hyenas. Together with Glaivezooka, it offers more chances to ensure that turn 1 Webspinner isn’t a bad play. I’ve seen opponents respond to Turn 1 Webspinner with Turn 1 Coin -> Ironbeak Owl. A silenced Webspinner is still a Beast and feeds the hungry hyenas.

The hyenas also offer themselves as a second set of Unleash the Hounds enabler. Playing Unleash the Hounds by itself can sometimes be a little underwhelming. Tacking Knife Juggler or Scavenging Hyena to it makes it so much better.

At first, i had Ancient Ooze and Kezan Mystic instead of Annoy-o-Trons. But after i lost a couple games by slowing down my play to capture a secret with the Mystic, which was a very bad idea. And somehow, my opponent Hunters didn’t seem to have any weapons for my Ooze. Atleast the Annoy-o-Trons serve as a speed bump against Leper Gnomes and Wolfriders.

Mulligan Strategy

Hunter
Keep weapons, Quick Shot, Animal Companion, Webspinners, 2-drops. Mulligan Scavenging Hyenas unless Webspinner is in hand. Save Quick Shot for Knife Jugglers and Huffers. Try to activate their Haunted Creepers.

Warlock
Pretty much the same as Hunter. Use Ironbeak Owl on Nerubian Egg and kill it. Do not leave silenced Eggs around. If there are no Eggs, or early play, then they’re usually demonlock or handlock; in that case, keep Hunter’s Mark and Ironbeak Owl for Mal’Ganis, taunted Giants. Be very mindful of Mal’Ganis.

Druid
Ironbeak Owl can be mulliganed away. Usually, there isn’t much to silence in the early game. Be mindful of 3rd turn Keeper of the Grove. When trading, do not trade in a way that leaves the board full of minions with 1 health; they will dies to Swipe’s collateral damage.

Geek Generation out.
